The Bolo-Khauz pond, whose clear waters three centuries ago reflected the beauty of the mosque, popularly nicknamed the Mosque of Forty Columns, and a minaret in the shape of a candle, became for the residents of Bukhara, the pearl of the East hidden in the hot sands, a saving source of fresh water. Since ancient times, life-giving crystal moisture has been revered here as the basis of foundations, bestowing life and fertility on the region.
Hauzs, rectangular pools of water that provided rest on their banks to wandering travelers and eternal wandering dervishes, helped to preserve it in the oasis warmed by the hot rays of the sun. Having quenched their thirst, they turned in this place with words of gratitude to the Almighty, who gave them life, peace and consolation. And in order for their prayers to be heard in heaven, local authorities, by order of the ruling emirs, built mosques next to reservoirs.
Of the 11 reservoirs that were once built on the ancient land of Bukhara, only two have conveyed their beauty through the centuries to the present day - Bolo-Khauz and Lyabi-Khauz. The amazingly beautiful ensemble of Bolo-Hauz - a pond lined with stone - reflects, as if in a mirror, the ancient traditions of oriental architecture with its grace and special charm.
Travelers from different countries, eager to see the sorceress Bukhara, stand for a long time near the emerald-turquoise surface of Bolo-Hauz, enjoying its coolness. In these moments, it seems that time boundaries are erased, and the wanderers, following the guide, are mentally transported centuries ago. In those distant times, special people monitored the purity of water in Bolo-Khauz, located in the historical center of the beautiful city, on the majestic Registan Square, and carried it in special leather vessels to homes for a fee.
The Bolo-Hauz reservoir has seen a lot in its lifetime. There were times when it was completely drained. Today here, like centuries ago, travelers see their reflection in the clear water surface and admire the beauty of the mosque of the same name reflected in the water. And even though the reservoir today has lost its original role - to quench the thirst of wanderers and residents of the ancient eastern city - this does not deprive it of its beauty and charm.
Canaan Travel invites guests and residents of Uzbekistan to experience the spirit of this ancient landmark, which, like many others, serves as the setting for the fabulous period of Bukhara.
