Mustakillik Square, or Independence Square translated from Uzbek, is one of the main places not only in Tashkent, but throughout the country. The history of this landmark began in the distant 19th century, when the Kokand Khanate was destroyed. On the site of the demolished Khan's palace, the design and construction of the main residence of the last Russian ruler of the Turkestan Governor-General began. After a large-scale revolution in 1917, the square in front of the residence began to bear the name “Red Square”.
In the early 50s of the last century, as a result of another restructuring, a monument to Vladimir Lenin appeared in the center of the square, and the square itself was renamed in his honor. The sculpture stood until September 1991, when Uzbekistan gained independence. Along with this, the square received its current name.
The main square of Uzbekistan houses such important government institutions as the Cabinet of Ministers, the Oliy Majlis and the Senate. In the very center is the Monument of Independence and Humanism - an important state symbol, reflected in national fine art, representing a globe with a map of Uzbekistan. On New Year's Eve, one of the most important holiday trees in the country, the Presidential one, is installed in this place.
Over the past years of independence, Mustakillik Maydoni Square has changed a lot. A huge structure “Yozgulik” - the Arch of good and noble aspirations - appeared at the main entrance. In 2006, a monument to the “Happy Mother” was erected, carefully holding her child at her breast. In the green zone in the north of the square there is the Walk of Fame and Memory of Heroes. These integral parts of Independence Square were built in honor of the Uzbek soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War.
Here, on marble galleries, there are 14 steles - one for each region of our country. The steles hold memory books in which the name of each person who died in 1941-1945 is written. The Walk of Fame is completed by the monument to the Sorrowful Mother and the Eternal Flame located in front of it. On May 9, the Day of Remembrance and Honor, hundreds of citizens and guests of the capital come to the Eternal Flame to pay their respects.
