Modari Khan Madrasah is part of a single ensemble with Abdullah Khan Madrasah in Bukhara. The complex is called Kosh Madrasah, which means “steam room”. Modari Khan is dedicated to the ruler’s mother; the name is translated as “mother of the khan.” Perhaps this was a “test of the pen” in complex construction, but this building is the smaller one in the ensemble. Abdullah Khan Madrasah, erected in honor of Abdullah Khan II, whose reign was marked by real prosperity for the beautiful Bukhara, was built later and became one of the outstanding works of architects of that time.
However, the quality of Modari Khan's design is at a high level; mention of this can be found in the chronicles of the court chronicler. 400 years later, restorers confirmed once again that the building is durable and will last for a very long time.
The task of the madrasah was traditional - an educational institution for educating young people in the spirit of national and religious traditions. For a person to study at a madrasah meant to open the way to a new future. It was for this reason that every family tried to send at least one child to study.
The landmark is located at an angle to the road, so its design is not a strict geometric figure. Asymmetrical elements, despite this, fit very well with the overall design. The main entrance is a traditional pointed arch with high arches and is decorated with majolica with flower designs. Carved brick mosaics add richness to the façade. The general design of the madrasah is quite modest. The standard design of the educational part is a two-story row of hudjras and an ivan along the perimeter of the courtyard. On both sides of the entrance portal there is a mosque and a darshona (educational premises). Above the entrance to the madrasah there is an inscription laid out in majolica. In the form of a verse, it indicates the time of construction - 1566-1567.
These days, the madrasah no longer serves the spiritual purposes for which it was built - now it is a place for craft fairs, where guests of sunny Uzbekistan purchase examples of oriental art from Usto masters, whose knowledge and skills were passed on to them by their ancestors. Travelers also find relaxation and Bukhara culinary delights in the restaurant located here.
