ABULKASYM MADRASSAH

Abulkasym madrasah is a whole story in one building. Here every wall is imbued with the spirit of human destinies and events. It was built in 1850. The construction was financed and supported by Abulkasym-ishan, an educated man who was respected among the townspeople. The site chosen for construction was the area near the Muyi Muborak khanaka.

The building is two-level, with a high lancet entrance decorated with carved bricks. The same pointed portals with rooms are located on the second floor. In the inner part of the courtyard, hujras are built in a circle, a kind of cells for students to live. Many of them had stoves and washbasins.

For that time, these were luxurious premises, which made them stand out among similar educational institutions. Abulkasym spent huge amounts of money on construction and paid for the education of 150 students.

Theology classes and educational work were traditionally held within the walls of this madrasah. Many famous people received their education here: A. Kadyriy, M. Abdurashidkhonov, G. Zafariy and others.

During the transition of Uzbekistan under the influence of Russia in 1919, the madrasah was closed and its activities were suspended. The building was empty until 1929, when the madrasah took on the role of a hostel. Due to the fact that the complex had many rooms, more than 70 families found shelter in it. They lived in this place until 1974.

When the families were resettled, the building became empty again. Later, so that the finished building would not stand idle, one of the toy manufacturing workshops was organized within its walls. Without proper care and restoration work, the landmark began to deteriorate. His appearance changed, his colors faded.

The next wave of tourism in the countries of the Union attracted attention to the madrasah, and in 1987 it was finally decided to restore the building and return it to its original appearance. Today, the Abulkasym madrasah exists and operates, as intended during construction, as an educational institution. True, they teach here not religious canons, but handicrafts.

One of the branches of the artisans association “Khunarmand” is located here.

Today you can take part in master classes and purchase almost any product of Uzbekistan artisans for a souvenir within the walls of the Abdulkasym madrasah.
