MADRASAH OF ABDULAZIZ KHAN

The Madrasah of Abdulaziz Khan appeared in Bukhara 235 years later than the Madrasah of Ulugbek, in 1652. Contrary to traditions, the landmark became part of the architectural complex without adopting the design of the earlier building. From the very beginning, it was planned to create a luxurious madrasah that would absorb the skills of the best architects of the time in order to surprise and delight with its beauty and decoration. According to information preserved from that period, Abdulaziz Khan was famous for his courage and generosity. Importantly, he was a lover of science and education. This fact is confirmed by the fact that during his reign one of the most beautiful libraries with manuscripts was collected. Evidence of this is the madrasah rebuilt on his orders.

A striking distinctive part of the building is the entrance portal. It is not just large in size, but also decorated with incredible ornaments. The two floors of arches correspond to the canons of madrasah architecture, but the decoration is amazing. The second level of pointed balconies is made in the form of many niches, which are decorated with paintings and ornaments. The same ornament leads the eye to the top of the pointed arch, becoming smaller and more graceful with each new level. The side parts of the main entrance are only half decorated. This is due to the fact that during the absence of Abdulaziz Khan, an uprising arose in the city, which, although it was suppressed, prevented the craftsmen from completing their work. So the main entrance remained unfinished.

The two towers at the corners also lack bright colors. But even from the part that was completed, one can judge the skill of the builders of that time. Interesting fact: for the first time in the history of architecture in Central Asia, yellow paint was used in decoration. Previously, craftsmen used only blue, light blue and red-brown.

Carved tiles, relief majolica, different types of stone, marble, plaster modeling and molding, many elements are decorated with gilding. Each element catches the eye with its unusual structure or execution. Another amazing fact: the ornament of the madrasah consists of images of flowers, animals, and birds. Entire landscapes with dragons and trees. It also does not follow traditional designs. This suggests that Abdulaziz Khan actively supported trade and cultural relations with all states participating in the Great Silk Road.

The two mosques in the madrasah are luxuriously decorated, with ornamental decoration covering the walls and ceiling. One is a summer mosque, open, and the other is a winter mosque, so that parishioners feel comfortable at any time of the year. Today there is a souvenir shop in this place where tourists can buy a lot of interesting little things.
