Between the 13th and 14th centuries, a mausoleum was built over the burial place of the Bukhara sheikh Sayfaddin Boharzi. Sayfaddin, who received the popular nickname “Sheikh al-Alam”, which means “Sheikh of the world”, found his place in history thanks to his multiple services to the Muslim world. They say that his will led the Bukhara inhabitants to fight the Mongol conquerors, his words strengthened the faith of the people, and even some conquerors, struck by the spirit of Saifaddin, converted to Islam under his influence.
The mausoleum attracts with its grace and scale of forms. He introduces us to the evolution of the world of architecture itself. It is a complex building. There is a tomb, a gurkhan and a room of remembrance - ziyorathona. The profile of the building is created by two domes.
One of the features of the attraction is that it lacks any decorative decoration - both inside and outside. But when designing the monument, the architects did not skimp on the abundance of decorations. The tombstone in the gurkhon is made with chic and luxury. It depicts multi-dimensional drawings, there are writings in Arabic and ornamented patterns.
The building that appears before our eyes today was erected on this site in the 14th century. The mausoleum of Saifitdin Boharzi illustrates the innovative trends in the ideas of Bukhara architects. Here you can see the desire to learn something new and unusual. For example, here you can see the transition from the tetrahedral frame of the ziyorathona in the sphere of the dome to the octagonal continuation of the form. And the wide space is crowned with the usual domed bowl.
Over time, the building could not withstand the massiveness of the most complex structures, as a result of which it began to collapse. In the sixties of the last century, the restoration of the architectural monument was carried out. The architectural masterpiece was saved thanks to preserved archival materials. However, the elements turned out to be stronger and during the 1976 earthquake the dome almost collapsed.
In order to preserve the unique structure, it was reinforced with a special metal frame, which allows everyone to this day to see with their own eyes a guest from the past - the unique mausoleum of Saifaddin Boharzi.
