The Nugai caravanserai is a place of extreme interest for travelers who want to see Bukhara in all its glory. It’s worth starting with the fact that a caravanserai is a kind of luxury hotel for caravanners. “Barn” translated means “palace”, and in general this name corresponded to the building. Traders were people with money, and along trade routes, enterprising rich people built such hotels. Staying overnight, depositing goods in a warehouse, exchanging money and even trading, finding rest after a long journey and enjoying a good dinner in a teahouse, chatting with fellow traders - all this was an integral part of the establishment. In addition to a comfortable overnight stay, the caravanserai also served as a fortress capable of withstanding a siege by robbers. For this purpose, most of these sites had a well in the yard, and food supplies in the warehouses. In some caravanserais it was also possible to get bedding and dishes, in others only accommodation for the night, and travelers had to have everything they needed with them.
Nugai was distinguished by the fact that it could provide guests with all the necessary conditions. At any time of the day, life was in full swing here, there was a brisk trade in Chinese fabrics, silk, and spices. Traders brought souvenirs from Iran, India, China, local products, and various ethnic musical instruments here. Many varieties of tea also came here straight from East Asia. Within the walls of the caravanserai, sewing of robes and local and imported fabrics was established. Guests were offered not only to trade here, but even to live and store goods in warehouses. The place was well fortified.
The caravanserai was built in the 16th century. The only entrance was equipped with a strong gate. It was made in the form of one-story hudjras located along the perimeter of the courtyard. There are about 45 hujras in total, which could easily accommodate not only the guests themselves, but also their retinue. There were also rooms for staff.
Nowadays, life within the walls of Nugay is also busy. Only now there are many tourists here who have come to study the culture and life of Central Asia. Every year, the festival “From Silk to Spices” is held here, where visitors can not only enjoy a variety of craftsmen’s products, but also buy something for themselves.
During the festival, wine tasting from local grape varieties is open. Jewelry shops, souvenir shops, and craft workshops operate here all year round. The caravanserai is under UNESCO protection. A state program has been launched for the restoration and conservation of this historically important landmark.
Canaan Travel invites all guests and residents of Uzbekistan to visit, like wanderers of the distant past, the Nugai caravanserai and relax within its walls.
