The Kosh Madrasah ensemble was erected in Bukhara in the second half of the 16th century. The massive structure is visible from a distance even today, despite the densely packed city streets of old Bukhara. The personification of a new era in the development of architecture in Central Asia is expressed in everything: in harmony, in the decisions of architects. During the reign of Abdullah Khan in the 16th century, a real architectural surge began. This is how an ensemble appeared, which consists of two attractions: Modari Khan and Abdullah Khan.
The first was erected in 1568 and dedicated to the ruler’s mother. The building has amazing strength and remains in excellent condition to this day. Since the landmark is located at a slight angle to the road, it lacks precise symmetry. The façade features a colorful brick mosaic made up of various patterns in the form of geometric shapes and repetitions. In fact, this is the only thing that decorates the madrasah. There is an ivan in the rectangular courtyard. Framed by a two-story arcade with loggias, the courtyard acquires oriental comfort. Behind the ivan there are hudjras.
The second building was erected 23 years later. The construction of the Abdullah Khan madrasah was carried out according to a similar principle. The main entrance is represented by a portal with adjacent loggias with two floors, the top of which has a walk-through gallery. Craftsmen used various decorative solutions to decorate the madrasah. The glaze shimmers in the sun's rays, turning into a large colored spot. The madrasah is decorated with majolica tiles, neatly and aesthetically. Separately, it is worth noting the design of the doors in the madrassas. They were assembled without a single nail and a huge number of wooden fragments. The lobby and the main courtyard are connected by a gallery with two passages. The entrances to the mosque and the educational premises “Darshona” are also located here.
The mosque itself is located at an angle relative to the main building. In the courtyard of the mosque there are four ivans with high arched portals. They are decorated with mosaic brick belts. The western side of the ivan leads to other rooms located around the courtyard. The covered courtyard is something new that the builders of the Abdullah Khan madrasah introduced into architecture.
