The Cathedral of the Dormition in Tashkent is the most important Orthodox Christian institution in Central Asia. Today, the cathedral occupies central place in the Central Asian district.

Golden domes and sky-blue bell tower can be seen from afar. Twice a day, the service takes place, and the bell ringing reaches the most remote corners of the big city. A spacious courtyard and many halls and outbuildings, thousands of people visiting the cathedral daily, a small park and singing birds during the whole day make this place a paradise corner. The cathedral did not always look like this and it has a great history.

In the middle of the 19th century, military hospital in Tashkent was built there, while a small cemetery and church were located nearby. Over time, it became more and more difficult to place all parishioners in a small building.

Then the head of the hospital asked to expand the church. Residents of the city began to raise funds. Everyone took part in this, and the largest contribution was made by the Governor-General and merchant Dmitry Zoho. Subsequently, it was him who for about 10 years was the headman of the new church. 1879 was noteworthy for the opening of a new church. The stone bell tower became the crowning achievement of architecture.

In the 1920s, the Synod of the Orthodox Church took over the management of the cathedral, and ten years later the temple was closed, and the services were canceled. During the World War II, a sanitary warehouse worked on the territory of the temple. In 1958, religious people again got the opportunity to attend church, and after re-consecration the services were renewed.

During the administration of Bishop Ermogen, the cathedral became a pro-cathedral, a number of changes were made to the architecture, while the territory of the temple expanded. Later, when Uzbekistan already became independent, the temple architecture changed again. The changes affected the bell tower and the main dome, and the interior was decorated in a new style.

In 2016, another reconstruction works took place. Today, not only this cathedral itself is located there, but also territories for the consecration of water, for baptism, and even for a theological seminar. Besides, there is another small church dedicated to Luke of Crimea, who was a saint and surgeon. In this temple, a funeral services are held for the deceased. Many alleys, trees, hundreds of pigeons at the entrance — all this creates a unique atmosphere of the temple. At any time of the year, you can found many people near the temple during the day. There is also a fountain, which saves every traveler from the summer heat.
